Interests

Foreign Student Host

Rotary International hosts international students, providing them a home where they live with a family and attend school. I volunteered to host a student from Thailand in 2002-03.

I had another opportunity to host a student a few years later. Jill is the daughter of a friend of mine who lives and works in Braunschweig, Germany. She lived with me for a year while she attended South Medford High School. Because she had an American mother, Jill was bi-lingual and right at home with her teachers and classmates.

International Travel

It’s been my good fortune to travel a good deal. I’ve visited tropical places like the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Roatan (near Honduras), and Hawaii. Some of the most interesting countries I’ve seen are Italy, Germany, Austria, England, and Scotland. I would like to return to Florence and Rome to see all the things I missed the first time.  I also enjoyed a small sampling of Barcelona, Villefranche on the Côte d’Azur, and Malta, traveling by cruise ship. When I visit other countries, I realize how culture binds us and makes us unique at the same time. Travel excites, invigorates, and enlightens me as I grow in understanding for other cultures.
